Lead Commodities Analyst

Ludlow, MA

About the Job

The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) is the backbone of Massachusetts’ municipal utilities — empowering local communities with reliable, affordable, and increasingly innovative power supply solutions. As the energy landscape accelerates into a more complex, technology-driven future, we’re expanding our capabilities and growing an ambitious Market Management & Planning team ready to meet that challenge.

We are seeking a Lead Commodities Analyst to help shape the strategic direction of our Members’ power supply portfolios. This role goes beyond analysis — it is a chance to influence market strategy, optimize resources, and drive decisions that directly support the long-term resilience of municipal utilities across Massachusetts. If you thrive at the intersection of data, strategy, and emerging technology, this is a meaningful opportunity to make an impact.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Power Supply Strategy & Development

  • Build, evolve, and broaden MMWEC’s short- and mid-term power supply programs.
  • Present physical and financial supply strategies and hedging options to Member Systems.
  • Define Member risk tolerance and structure transactions that promote stability and flexibility.
  • Apply energy derivative pricing knowledge to optimize optionality and resource positioning.

Power Portfolio Management

  • Conduct structured analysis of Member resource mixes, identifying risks and diversification opportunities.
  • Monitor fuel inputs, forward markets, and utilization trends to reduce or stabilize power costs.
  • Implement strategies that reduce exposure, optimize resources, and meet budget targets.
  • Provide regular portfolio reviews and establish hedge/exposure targets within risk parameters.

Asset Optimization & ISO-NE Market Operations

  • Develop and execute strategies to maximize the economic and operational value of Member and MMWEC assets across ISO-NE markets (capacity, reserves, regulation, and more).
  • Report gross margins and asset economics with accuracy and insight.
  • Serve as backup bidder for Stony Brook and MMWEC assets in Day-Ahead and Real-Time markets.
  • Oversee Peak Alert and Remote Dispatch operations and communicate economic outcomes to Members.
  • Manage REC trading, procurement, and retirement in alignment with Member strategies.

Reporting & Forecasting

  • Prepare and analyze Power Portfolio Cost Reports, Power Cost Forecasts, and Asset Performance Reports.
  • Communicate performance results to Member Systems and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and quality of all distributed data.

Rotational & Daily Operations

  • Perform Daily Peak Demand Forecasting and Remote Dispatch duties.
  • Participate in daily rotational responsibilities including bidding, peak alert forecasting, and EV charging scheduling.
  • Support special projects and emerging initiatives as assigned.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in math, science, engineering, economics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3–7 years of relevant experience in energy markets, commodities, analytics, or similar fields.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required; SQL or other database experience preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret conflicting data.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage deadlines and Member expectations effectively.
  • Integrity, reliability, and a detail-oriented mindset.
